What is the difference between vitamin D and D3?

Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that is important for various aspects of health, including maintaining strong bones, aiding in the normal functioning of the immune system and playing a role in maintaining strong muscles. There are two main forms of vitamin D: vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) and vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol).

The main difference between vitamin D2 and vitamin D3 lies in their origin and biological activity. Vitamin D2 is primarily found in plant-based foods and is also synthesized by certain fungi. On the other hand, vitamin D3 is mainly produced in the skin when it is exposed to ultraviolet B (UVB) sunlight and is also found in animal-based foods such as fatty fish and eggs.

Although both forms of vitamin D can be utilized by the body, vitamin D3 is generally considered the most effective form because it is absorbed differently than D2. At Yummygums, we use vitamin D3 in our products to ensure you get the best possible benefits from this important nutrient. We incorporate it into our multivitamins Multi+, Mommy, Kids, and Iron Vegan. Additionally, we also sell it as a standalone supplement, Sunny D3, and D3 drops.

How much vitamin D per day?

The recommended daily amount (RDA) of vitamin D varies. For most people, the RDA based on supplements is 10 micrograms per day. However, some groups may need extra vitamin D due to a higher risk of deficiencies, such as young children, elderly individuals and people with darker skin tones. They may require a supplement to ensure they get enough vitamin D.

Adults can obtain vitamin D through sunlight and diet. Children, on the other hand, primarily rely on diet because it is advised to protect young children from direct sunlight as much as possible. Therefore, there is an official supplementation recommendation of 10 mcg of vitamin D per day for children up to 4 years old.

Where is vitamin D found?

Vitamin D3, also known as the 'sunshine vitamin,' can be found in a limited number of foods and can also be synthesized in your skin when exposed to sunlight. Some foods that naturally contain vitamin D include:

Fatty fish: Salmon, mackerel, tuna and sardines are good sources of vitamin D.
Eggs: Eggs contain vitamin D, especially in the yolk.
Meat liver: Liver from animals such as beef, pork and chicken also contains vitamin D, although in smaller amounts.
Fortified foods: Some foods are fortified with vitamin D, such as milk, cereals, orange juice and soy milk. (These become unnecessary when taking a supplement with vitamin D, as a supplement should already contain the correct amount.)

What is vitamin D good for?

Vitamin D3, also known as cholecalciferol, is beneficial for various functions in our body. Here are a few important benefits:

Healthy bones and teeth:
Vitamin D3 is essential for the absorption of calcium and phosphorus, which are important for maintaining healthy bones and teeth. Additionally, it is crucial for the development of strong bones in children and supports children's skeletal health.

Immune system:
It has a positive impact on the immune system, helping the body defend itself against infections and diseases. It also contributes to maintaining children's immune health and supports their body's defense system.

Muscle function:
Vitamin D3 plays a role in maintaining muscles and can help support normal muscle function.

Cell division:
It contributes to cell and tissue formation, which is important for the health and functioning of various tissues and organs in the body.

In summary, vitamin D3 plays a versatile role in our body and is essential for good health and well-being.
