The Science Behind the Gummy: How Your Body Absorbs Vitamins

But what exactly does that mean? And why is it interesting?

We have looked into it for you and summarized it.

What was researched?

A clinical study published in the scientific journal Nutrients (2019) examined how well the body absorbs vitamin D from a gummy versus a tablet. Participants were first given a gummy, then (after a break) a tablet containing the same amount of the active ingredient. By taking blood samples at multiple points in the study, the actual absorption of the vitamin was measured.

What came out?

The conclusion was clear: the vitamin from the gummy was absorbed better and faster than from the tablet. The vitamin level in the blood after the gummy was almost twice as high as after the tablet. This says something important about the influence of the form in which you take a supplement .

Why does a gummy work better?

Gummies partially dissolve in your mouth and then travel further into your stomach and intestines. This accelerates absorption. Vitamins in gummies are also often contained in a matrix (for example, with oils or pectin) that supports absorption. This is especially beneficial for fat-soluble vitamins.

What are fat-soluble vitamins?

Fat-soluble vitamins, as the name suggests, dissolve in fat. Your body absorbs them better when some fat is also present. Gummies naturally contain ingredients that can support this absorption. Examples of fat-soluble vitamins:

And what about water-soluble vitamins?
